Using Our Instagram “Story Games”

“Story Games” are basically templates that you use on Instagram. They’re those fill-in-the-blank things you’ve seen people make to share everything from their favorite celebrities to their cooking accomplishments.

Here are the quick instructions to set one up:

  1. First, save a template to your device. Visit this web page (yeah — the one you’re reading this on!) on mobile. Press and hold on a template to save the picture to your device.
  2. Then, go into Instagram stories. Upload the saved photo to your story by tapping the box in the bottom left corner. Fill in the blanks or prompts.
  3. Once you have posted your filled-in version of the template, upload a second blank template and tag a friend to encourage them to fill it out too!

Using Instagram “Prompts”

The purpose of these “prompts” is to use Instagram’s built-in features to engage your friends in conversation. Here’s how to access them.

Instructions:

  • Have you used Instagram’s Challenges before? They’re easy.
    • Snap a photo or go to “Create” mode in Instagram Stories.
    • Then, go into the sticker menu at the top of your screen and look for the sticker that says “CHALLENGE” in yellow.
    • Start typing and then select the challenge you want to participate in (these are pre-populated, so you can’t create your own). We’ve suggested the #PHOTOCHALLENGE or #STAYATHOMECHALLENGE.
    • Once you’ve selected a challenge, create a photo or video that captures your entry in the challenge. Maybe it’s the best pic in your camera roll from this week or the epic homemade pizza you crafted during quarantine.
  • To set up an “Ask Me Anything” question box on Insta…
    • Go to “Create” mode in Instagram Stories by toggling the bottom of your screen to the left.
    • Once you’re in “Create” mode, toggle the bottom menu to the right, until you see this purple card icon with a question mark on it.
    • Use the question box to write in a question to your followers. Use one of our prompts to get started.
    • When people share good responses, screen shot them and put them in your stories to show people the results of your poll!
  • To set up a “Quick Draw” box on Insta…
    • Go to “Create” mode in Instagram Stories by toggling the bottom of your screen to the left.
    • Once you’re in “Create” mode, toggle the bottom menu to the right, until you see this icon with several yellow and orange cards on it.
    • Add text to describe what you are “quick drawing” and then, of course, add your design! Use one of our prompts to get started.
    • Tag a friend in your story before you post it to encourage them to take the same “quick draw” challenge.
    • If people have great reactions to your drawing, screen shot them and put them in your stories to show people the results of your poll!

Starting and Hosting Conversations on Other Channels

Do you want to connect with your peers or start a conversation outside of Insta? We want you to lead the way. Our youth advisors have these quick tips for high-quality conversations on social:

  • You can use a simple question or prompt to start conversations with friends and peers on Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, Discord and beyond. Social media is a great place to start a conversation, even if you wouldn’t do that IRL.
  • Start with a question about current events or something you are passionate about. Post it to your channels and invite people to respond or participate. Questions that invite conversation and connection include:
    • “What do you think about this issue?”
    • “What has your experience been?”
    • “How is your perspective similar or different to mine?”
  • Be prepared to respond to comments, when people share them. Even better — follow up in person, if someone you know says something interesting!
